The client had already refurbished much of the existing property to a high standard, but the kitchen had been left untouched, to be carried out with the broader extension & reconfiguration at ground floor. The primary objective was therefore relatively simple & familiar, extending into the side return to create a new open plan kitchen & dining area, and reconnecting this with the rest of the ground floor living accommodation.
Despite the relatively simple brief, there were still constraints in terms of the very narrow space available in the side return, the requirement for a separate WC, separate laundry space, new boiler location and access to both the rear reception & garden. Careful working of the plan and the production and refinement of various strategic possibilities with the client led us to the favoured arrangement, creating a protected dining area flanked by a window seat facing the garden, shelving (as opposed to a breakfast bar) in the back of the island, and locating the new WC and new laundry area outside of the main open plan space. Additional daylight is then brought into the side extension (serving the dining area & access to the rear reception) via a large format flat rooflight.
Our typical palette of materials and standard products are used throughout, but these are also complemented with some additional bespoke elements, including re-sprayed IKEA kitchen fronts, birch ply shelving & bench top and brass tap.
