The property is a Victorian mid terrace ground floor garden flat near to Stoke Newington Common.
The principal objective of the project was to add additional living accommodation to the side of the property in order to allow the addition of a 2nd bedroom. As an existing rear extension had previously been added by Hackney Council in the 70's, a key aspect of the brief was to upgrade this extension and coordinate the new and old extensions.
In order to achieve sufficient living accommodation to the rear, a side infill extension was created housing a new kitchen, whilst the two existing volumes of the original rear projection and the 70's extension were consolidated, forming an open plan space for the living and dining functions. Two new generous bedrooms were then formed within the main volume of the house.
The new side infill extension was stepped below and back from the existing rear extension in order to create a subordinate volume. Matching materials and detailing were then used to tie the two extensions together as a distinct pair.
A simple palette of materials and standard products are used throughout, in coordination with the client's distinct tastes, in order to provide a simple yet eclectic modern aesthetic.
